A Documentary Wedding at Hotel Haya | Patience & Malachi
There’s something really special about a wedding that brings people back together! Friends from different chapters of life, family members who traveled from near and far, and people who haven’t been in the same room together for years all suddenly find themselves gathered in one place, celebrating something meaningful. This Summer wedding at Hotel Haya felt especially personal to me because I met both the Patience and Malachi while we were in college and got to build a connection with them before their wedding day was even known. Photographing their wedding meant more than documenting their day. It meant returning to the community that has been such an important part of my own life and getting to witness two dear friends surrounded by so many of the people who helped shape them.
The Wedding Story
As a Tampa wedding photographer, I’m always looking for the moments that happen naturally: the quiet glances, the uncontrollable laughter, the happy tears, and all the little in between moments that make a wedding day feel like you. That’s especially true of my work as a documentary wedding photographer, and this Hotel Haya wedding was such a meaningful one to photograph. Since I already knew these two before their wedding day, it felt incredibly special to document the most important day of their lives. I genuinely loved being around them and their people, and I think that connection made the day even more fun to photograph. Hotel Haya in Tampa was the perfect setting for their celebration, too. Its warm, colorful spaces and thoughtful details made even the most unplanned moments feel beautiful without ever taking away from what was actually happening. For me, that’s what makes documentary wedding photography so special: creating photographs that feel honest and lived in, while letting the beauty of the day and the place you chose to celebrate it speak for itself.
The Spaces at Hotel Haya
Las Novedades
The ceremony took place in Las Novedades, where the setting created such a beautiful atmosphere for the beginning of the celebration. The space already had so much personality that the moments themselves could take center stage.
The Valencia Foyer
For bridal party portraits, we moved into the Valencia Foyer. The colors, architecture, and natural character of the space made it one of those places where you really don’t need to add much. A group of people who love each other, a little direction, and a beautiful space were more than enough.
The Valencia Ballroom
The reception brought everyone into the Valencia Ballroom, and this space was just as beautiful once the celebration began. Between the details of the room and the energy of everyone inside it, there was already so much to photograph. I loved being able to step back and let the moments unfold naturally.
Letting the day be the day
Letting the day be the day is ultimately what I love about documentary wedding photography. I don’t want to create moments that look beautiful in photographs. I want to photograph the moments that are already beautiful because they are real.
This wedding was such a perfect example of that. The spaces at Hotel Haya gave us incredible backdrops, but they never needed to be the focus. The focus was always the couple, their people, and the story they were creating together.
I loved being there, I loved their people, and I loved getting to see a familiar relationship become part of such a beautiful day.
Hotel Haya simply gave all of those moments a beautiful place to happen.
